Investours is a non-profit microfinance organization that is working to combine the power of microfinance with the power of tourism to fight poverty around Oaxaca.
They run day-long, socially-responsible tours to nearby pueblos where participants get to meet women living in the town who are applying for their loans. Tour participants learn about the town, and the women’s lives and businesses. For example, in Teotitlan del Valle, a town 30 minutes from Oaxaca City and famous for its beautiful weaving, participants will meet weavers and see the weaving process, as well as meet women running other small projects such as raising chickens, selling fruit or making tortillas. At the end of the tour, 100% of the tour fee goes as an interest-free microloan to the women we visited.
Schedule: Tours run every Thursday from 1pm to 7 pm, and every Saturday from 9am to 4pm.
Location: Tours leave from the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, at Avenida Juarez #909.
Cost: $50 US. Fee includes lunch, transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, and a tour guide in English and Spanish. 100% of the tour fee is given as an interest-free micro-loan.
