Oaxaca Street Food [Print version]

Oaxaca offers innumerable flavors that will delight the most demanding and sophisticated palates, it is not necessary to go to expensive or luxurious places for this, it is enough to know where to find those places that please our sense of taste.

On the street of Murguia, one block from the Calzada de la Republica, at the Mercado de la Merced, we can find the ideal place to enjoy the most traditional dishes of this city, the basic diet of Oaxacans: the delicious memelas and empanadas filled with cheese and squash blossoms or Chicken in spicy yellow sauce.

To enjoy tamales, a symbol of the national cuisine, the ideal option is the small stand that sets up on the corner of Hidalgo and 20 de Noviembre, because of its large variety which includes, chepil (a savory herb), beans, chili slices, mole and sweet, among others.

And inside the “Mercado Benito Juárez” in the food stall called “La Abuelita” we can enjoy traditional Oaxaqueñan food such as mole, coloradito, amarillo and verde, enfrijoladas or entomatadas accompanied with a delicious beef steak or chilied pork steak or spicy sausage (chorizo) as well as stuffed chilies.

Also at that same place we have the option of charcoal grilled meat that one chooses: chorizo, beef and chilied pork, grilled on the spot and accompanied by cactus leaf salad or radishes, as well as all types of salsas and grilled chilies and hand made tortillas.

Inside the 20 de Noviembre Market we can find sweets to delight the palate in “Arte Oaxaqueño” that can be accompanied by the fruit waters of “Casilda” horchata (made with rice), chilacayota (winter squash), tuna (prickly pear), mango, and plum among others; for after a succulent typical meal.

If you’d rather, you can walk a few blocks to sit at the shady tables of “La Soledad” to enjoy one of the delicious regional home made nieves (ice creams) such as sorbete (a type of vanilla), leche quemada (burnt milk), tuna and lemon, among others.

However should your palate need spicier or sour flavors the best option is to go to the corner of Matamoros and Macedonio Alcala and taste the pickled plums or mangos or the piedrazos (the rock).

If you like the beverages that come from the maguey, then you will need to taste pulque and for that you can please your throat in the interior of the Abastos Market.

At night before or after partying all night there art the well known tlayudas (giant tostadas) located on the street of Los Libres, there you can be served until the wee hours of the morning.
